David Fincher directs Rick Springfield in 1985's The Beat of the Live Drum. Here, he wrings plenty of bleak charm out of the apocalypse and shows us (unbelievably, by the :41 mark) that Springfield is at least three different people. To what end, I have no idea. (I should probably watch the whole video-documentary thingy again, seeing how it's only been twenty-six and a half years since I last saw it. If anybody wants to buy it for me for Christmas, or any other occasion, here it is.) You gotta love the presence of the oily lounge singer, which he seems to come by a little too naturally, but we should probably let the performer slide and just give Fincher all the credit for dead-on vision and talent. Bonus points for the impressive ICBM set--although really, anything pre-CGI manages to score big points with me anymore. Lastly, I think all the video needed was a pie fight with all hands at the end to truly make this one a classic.
